Kari Mäkelä
Senior Safety Officer, IAEA Operational Safety Section
He has more than 37 years of experience in nuclear industry. Since 1987 he worked with Technical Research Centre of Finland (VTT) carrying out research projects to NPPs in Finland and abroad. During VTT period he also worked longer periods at Stanford Research Institute (USA), Institutt for Energieteknikk (Norway) and Fracture Research Institute (Japan) performing various types of corrosion studies. Since 2007 he joined Fortum Power and Heat Oy, Loviisa NPP where he started in operations but moved after 3 years to Technical Unit to work in ageing management area as manager of system engineers. In 2012 he moved to Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK) in Finland as senior inspector and eventually became operations manager with a responsibility to summarize the overall safety assessment of Loviisa NPP. At STUK he also worked actively in the group addressing topics related to NPP ageing management for long term operation. Since 2015 he has been with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna, Austria. In the area of ageing management and operational safety he has participated as an IAEA deputy team leader multiple SALTO and OSART Peer Review Service missions, and worked in Leadership and Management as well as Performance Improvement teams.
